The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries, working in partnership with organisations in developing countries. ILRI is part of the CGIAR besides 14 other international research institutes scattered around the world and has more than 600 employees. ILRI provides state of the art labs (BSL2 & 3), BSL2 large and small animal units, and a strong bioinformatics platform.
CBPP (Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia), caused by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides and
present in more than 25 countries of sub-Saharan Africa is an economically important livestock disease in Africa. This PhD project aims to apply synthetic biology tools to identify and characterise Mycoplasma mycoides molecules and evaluate their function in virulence as well as for their suitability for vaccine development. The project will be carried in close collaboration with scientists at the J Craig Venter institute in Rockville, USA and INRA in Bordeaux, France.Specifically, the successful applicant will be expected to:
- Assist in development and implementation of synthetic biology tools for Mycoplasma mycoides
- Assist in development of cell culture assays
- Test mutagenized strains and characterize host immune responses
Location: ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya
Eligibility
- Veterinary degree or a MSc in biosciences obtained no more than 3 years ago
- Experience in academic research groups
- Experience in surgery is an advantage
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in multidisciplinary and multicultural research environment.
Terms of appointment: The appointment will be for three years. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package including health insurance and stipend paid in US dollars.
